What's On Barcelona: 11th - 13th September

Bon dia!

I’m gonna tell you a secret. I quite liked the rain. Didn’t like that I’d left my washing out in it, but you can’t have everything.

Hopefully it’s cooled Barcelona down a bit. Would be nice to walk for more than 15 minutes without looking like I’ve fallen in the sea.

Anyway, you signed up to find out what’s on in Barcelona, not for my thoughts on rain, so I’ll shut up now.

1. Barcelona Vive México at Poble Espanyol

What’s On: Poble Espanyol is hosting a huge Mexican festival this weekend, with mariachis, lucha libre, traditional dancing, DJs and more than 30 food and craft stalls.

There are more than 50 activities across the weekend, including piñatas and workshops for kids, with a more family friendly programme during the day and the bigger music and performances taking over later in the afternoon.

Catalonia Beyond Fuet: Get Ready for La Diada [AD]

Did you know that on the 11th of September (Friday) we celebrate la Diada Nacional de Catalunya (Catalonia's National Day)? It's a public holiday here!

The Diada commemorates the fall of Barcelona in 1714, during the War of the Spanish Succession.

Here's some basic vocabulary to help you get through the day:
la Diada – the (national) day
la senyera – the official Catalan flag (four red stripes on yellow)
Groc i vermell: yellow and red
l'Onze de Setembre – the 11th of September

2. La Diada Open Day: Visit Barcelona Landmarks for Free

What’s On: For La Diada, museums, government buildings and other landmarks across Barcelona are opening to the public for free.

Palau Güell – 10am–8pm (advance booking required)
Palau de la Generalitat – 11am–5pm (advance booking required)
MNAC – 10am–2pm (advance booking recommended)
Museu d’Història de Catalunya – 10am–2:30pm
El Born. Museu d’Història de Barcelona – family express visits throughout the day
Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya – 10am–2pm (advance booking)
Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya – 10am–2:30pm
Centre Excursionista de Catalunya – 11am–1pm (advance booking required)

3. Free Diada Concerts at Arc de Triomf

What’s On: As part of La Diada celebrations, there’ll be a free evening of live music and DJs near Arc de Triomf.

The concerts are part of the Festa per la Llibertat, with music starting at 7pm and continuing late into the night.

4. Festes del Poblenou

What’s On: Poblenou celebrates its neighbourhood festival with ten days of live music, street parties, castellers (human towers), giant parades, a correfoc (fire run), fireworks, communal dinners and activities taking place across the neighbourhood.

Plan Ahead: Barcelona Fringe Festival

What’s On: The Barcelona Fringe Festival takes place this November, with 10 days of shows and performances at venues across the city. Expect everything from stand-up and improv to clowning, gameshows and more, with performers from Barcelona and around the world.

The first batch of shows has just been announced, including comedian Mike Rice, with over 300 shows set to make up the full festival programme.

There’s also a Best of the Barcelona Fringe show on opening weekend at Casino Barcelona, where you can catch a selection of acts from across the festival in one show.
