What's On Barcelona: September Edition

Welcome to the September edition of What’s On Barcelona, giving a look ahead to the main events taking place this month. You’ll still get the usual weekly emails on Thursday.

Something I’ve missed a little over the last few months are food festivals. I guess nobody wants to stand around in 35 degree heat eating hot food from a paper plate, but I for one am happy they’re back this month.

If you’re looking for a last minute plan, The Weeknd is performing tonight at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, there seem to be some tickets available, but they are pricey.

Anyway here’s What’s On in September. Hope you like it, maybe tell a friend about it if you feel like it.

1. Extreme Barcelona – 4th–6th September

What’s On: Extreme Barcelona brings three days of action sports and urban culture to Parc del Fòrum, with around 500 athletes from 40 countries competing across almost 30 competitions. Expect BMX Freestyle, skateboarding, breaking, 3x3 basketball, scootering, street football and more, alongside music, art & other activities. Entry is free.

2. Festes del Poblenou – 10th–20th September

What’s On: Poblenou celebrates its neighbourhood festival with ten days of live music, street parties, castellers (human towers), giant parades, a correfoc (fire run), fireworks, communal dinners and activities taking place across the neighbourhood.

3. Pizza Fest Badalona – 10th–13th September

What’s On: Eight pizzerias from Badalona and the surrounding area will compete to be crowned the best pizza, each serving a classic and a gourmet creation for you to try and vote on. There'll also be live music, workshops, cooking demonstrations and other activities throughout the four-day festival. Entry is free.

Catalonia Beyond Fuet: Do You Want To Learn Catalan? [AD]

Com va l’estiu? I el català?

Do you know what CPNL stands for? It is the Consorci per a la Normalització Lingüística (Consortium for Linguistic Normalization). It is a public institute that works to boost the learning and use of Catalan in society.

You can have a look at its Catalan courses and here’s an online map where you can find the institute that is closer to you.

New courses will soon be opening in September! So this is your chance to learn this beautiful language.

4. Barcelona Gallery Weekend – 17th–20th September

What’s On: Barcelona Gallery Weekend marks the start of the new art season, with contemporary and modern art galleries across Barcelona and L'Hospitalet opening their doors for four days of free exhibitions and activities. Alongside the exhibitions, there'll be guided visits with artists and gallery owners, talks, performances, gallery routes and family activities.

5. Born Street Food Festival – 18th–20th September

What’s On: Born Street Food takes over Pla de Palau for three days of food, drinks and music in the run-up to La Mercè. Some of the neighbourhood's best restaurants and chefs take their kitchens out onto the street, cooking everything from Basque txuleta and seafood rice to tacos, focaccia, burgers and cheesecake right in front of you.

6. Barcelona Hotel Bar Week – 21st–27th September

What’s On: More than 30 of Barcelona's top hotel bars take part in a week dedicated to cocktails, with each creating special €12 drinks for the occasion. There'll also be events across the city including cocktail masterclasses, guest bartenders, tastings, brunches, dinners and parties.

7. La Mercè – 23rd–27th September

What’s On: La Mercè is Barcelona’s annual festa major, held in honour of the city’s patron saint, Mare de Déu de la Mercè. Since 1871 it’s grown into the city’s biggest festival with with hundreds of free events including concerts, castellers (human towers), giant parades, correfocs (fire runs), street performances and fireworks.

📅 When: Wed 23rd – Sun 27th September
📍 Where: Across Barcelona

Highlights
La Mercè Day (Thurs 24th September)
Barcelona's official city holiday and one of the biggest days of the festival, with castellers in the morning, the Cavalcada de la Mercè parade in the afternoon and plenty of traditional Catalan celebrations throughout the city.

Free Museum Entry (Thurs 24th September)
A number of Barcelona's museums and cultural spaces will open their doors for free to celebrate La Mercè.

Correfoc (Sat 26th September)
One of the festival's biggest spectacles, with devils, dragons, drums and fireworks taking over the streets. There's a children's Correfoc in the afternoon followed by the main fire run in the evening.

Piromusical (Sun 27th September)
La Mercè finishes with its huge music and fireworks show at 10pm. This year it moves from its usual home at Plaça d'Espanya to Bogatell Beach, with Josep Montero from Oques Grasses choosing the soundtrack.

8. Nou Barris Wine Festival – 26th September

What’s On: Spend the day trying wines from Catalan producers at this wine festival in Nou Barris, with reds, whites, rosés, sparkling and orange wines on offer. There'll also be food and DJs playing throughout the day, with the festival aiming to make wine tasting a bit more casual and accessible.
